Beautiful, charismatic, agile and sensitive: how to develop a 3D character that captivates a demanding audience

I developed the character used in the advertising campaign for Grupo Grau Educacional's technical courses.

I developed the character Gau, the avatar of “Grau Técnico”, a company that is part of the Grupo Grau Educacional, used in the advertising campaign for the technical courses of the Grupo Grau Educacional. The character is stylized and carries traits common to most Brazilians, as well as being extremely charismatic.

In addition to modeling, texturing, rigging, and animations, I was also responsible for lighting and rendering various animations. Besides the character, I also modeled some different costumes and assets. When I started working on the project, the character’s concept had already been defined and approved.

The client

Grau Educacional is an educational institution that, in just 10 years, has become present throughout Brazil, with more than 100 units, making it the largest network of private technical schools in the country.

What I did

3D Modeling, Texturing, Rigging, Animations, Lighting, Rendering and Composition.

Tools I used

Autodesk Maya / Maxon ZBrush / Marvelous Designer / Autodesk Arnold Render / Adobe After Effects

Project Outcome

Key points

I developed the character modeling following the original concept approved by the agency and the client. One of the most challenging parts was modeling the character’s hair, which is always tricky due to its complexity. The rigging was intended to provide maximum flexibility. It was designed to follow the human anatomy in a non-stylized way, even though a system of bent limbs had been implemented for future use.

What I learned

The technical challenge of modeling, rigging, and animating a character is always high, primarily since, in this job, I carried out all the stages and presented them in weekly sprints to the production company and advertising agency. However, challenges like this are always suitable for testing more efficient workflows.

I'm always looking for new challenges, projects and creative partnerships. Shall we talk?
